Snyder, Texas is centrally located in West Texas approximately 90 miles from Lubbock, Abilene, and Midland-Odessa. Snyder was the recipient of the prestigious Tall Texan Award from the Texas Department of Agriculture in January 2011. Snyder is home to a Mitsubishi wind turbine facility and an Invenergy wind farm. It is also home to Patterson drilling and Kinder Morgan. Both contribute to Snyder and Scurry county being one of the top oil production regions in Texas.
Major highways entering Snyder are the U.S. 84 from Abilene and Lubbock, Highway 208 from Colorado City, and Midland/Odessa, 79 miles west of Abilene and 112 miles north of San Angelo.
Snyder's location in the West Texas region make it the ideal location for industry in West Texas. This benefit has brought many industries to Scurry County. Oil, wind power, and cotton are all produced in the Snyder countryside and contribute to our growing economy.
The Scurry County oil boom in 1948-1951, created around 2,000 wells in Scurry County. Since then, the oil industry has remained an integral part of the local economy and is still one of the largest employers in the Snyder area.
The wind energy business is the fastest growing industry in the Snyder, Texas area. There are currently six wind farms in the area with a total of 400 turbines. These turbines provide enough electricity to support 140,000 homes.
On average, there are about 50 to 60 thousand acres of cotton planted every year. Yield averages about 1/2 bale per acre planted. There are two cotton gins operating in the area and cotton one of Snyder's and Scurry County's leading industries.
